Former colony of the French and British Empires, Suriname is a small country located in the northern part of the South American continent, which gained its independence on November 25, 1975. Originally, Suriname was part of a group of Dutch colonies, but was eventually passed on to the British Empire. In the early years of British and Dutch domination, Suriname was heavily relying on coffee, cocoa and sugar cane plantations along the rivers. It was a well known fact that the slaves from Suriname were treated horribly. With the help of the Native South Americans, the runaway Suriname slaves managed to establish a new and unique culture, which ended up being very successful.

After slavery had been abolished in 1863, there was a period of 10 years during which the Suriname people were required to continue working on plantations for a minimal pay, without state sanctioned torture. In the 20th century, people from Suriname started migrating towards the Netherlands, thinking that life might be easier than in their country. Although Suriname had a troublesome history, nowadays it is one of the most beautiful countries in South America, a real paradise with wonderful surroundings, lush rainforests, the perfect destination for holidays and research trips. One of the most interesting facts about Suriname is that is part of the UNESCO Natural Heritage reserve.

Some of the most beautiful landmarks you can find in Suriname are the Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge, built with the purpose of facilitating and promoting the development of the eastern part of Suriname. It is almost 115 years old and it was initially built as a theatre, but eventually burned down. Perhaps one of the most peculiar things you can see in Suriname is the fact that the synagogue and the mosque are next to each other, and have been known to share a parking facility during their religious rites. Suriname – online information and interesting facts

Suriname is a small country in South America that has the least land area of any other country on the continent. With a population of only about 470,000 people – only slightly more than that of Omaha, Nebraska – it is also one of the most sparsely populated countries in South America with most of its residents living on the northern side, close to the Atlantic Ocean. With its northern border being an ocean and its southern being the largest country in South America, it is shocking to find that Suriname is also a divider between French Guiana in the east and Guyana in the west.

Suriname is a country dominated by deep rain forests, there is a surprisingly healthy economy that relies mainly on the mining and exportation of metals. The number one export is Bauxite (Aluminum ore/Alumina) which is 70% of all the exports of the country. Suriname also export gold and iron, as well as maintain strong industries in fish, lumber, oil and produce. However, this Dutch speaking country is also growing its tourism trade through a higher demand for eco-friendly activities and exploration of the interior forests.

The people in Suriname are an extremely diverse group. There are many different cultures that play a large role in how the country is run, as well as providing a broad range of cultural adaptations into the lives of the people. This diversity can be seen in everything from celebrations, to national holidays and even in the construction of some buildings (many of which have a very European style).
